How often should I change my air filter?

The air filter is similar to the masks we wear on hazy days. Its main function is to block dust, sand, and other impurities in the air. Although this part is inconspicuous and inexpensive, it plays an extremely important role. Experiments have been conducted in the past. If a car's air filter is removed and driven normally, the cylinder wear is eight times that of a car with an air filter, the piston wear is three times, and the piston ring wear is nine times.
The air filter is similar to the masks we wear on hazy days. Its main function is to block dust, sand, and other impurities in the air. Although this part is inconspicuous and inexpensive, it plays a crucial role. Experiments have been conducted in the past. If the car's air filter is removed and driven as usual, the cylinder wear is eight times that of a car with an air filter, the piston wear is three times, and the piston ring wear is nine times. In other words, without this air filter, the engine would be scrapped in two or three years. In addition, it also has other hazards. If so many impurities in the air are ground together and burned with gasoline, incomplete combustion and residue of impurities and carbon deposits will occur. As a result, the car will experience insufficient power and increased fuel consumption, entering a vicious cycle, and eventually the car will become unusable.
Generally, the replacement cycle of the air filter is specified in the manufacturer's maintenance manual. Generally, it is recommended to replace the air filter every 10,000-15,000 kilometers, because after a long time, the blockage of the air filter will affect the engine's intake. As a result, the air-fuel ratio in the engine changes, affecting the combustion process, resulting in carbon deposits, unstable idling, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption inside the engine.
Cars encounter various situations in actual use. Therefore, there is no absolute standard for replacing the air filter, as it depends on the amount of dust and impurities absorbed by the air filter. It is also an air filter. For vehicles that have been driving on highways for a long time, it can be replaced after 30,000 kilometers or even longer; for an off-road vehicle that shuttles between countries, it may need to be replaced within two months. Of course, these two situations are relatively extreme. For ordinary urban vehicles, it is more appropriate to replace the air filter annually or every 20,000 kilometers.
Of course, the vehicle's driving time or mileage is only a reference value. The ultimate factor determining whether the air filter needs to be replaced is whether it allows sufficient air to pass through. The air filter must ensure that impurities in the air are filtered out while allowing sufficient air to enter the engine.
It needs to be explained here that after the air filter has been working for a period of time, it is actually more efficient than a new air filter. This is because the air filter has already adsorbed those impurities, which can help it capture more tiny dust particles. Eventually, the air filter will affect the engine's operation due to the accumulation of too much dust. At this time, the vehicle's fuel economy, power, and emissions will gradually deteriorate until you replace the new air filter. A tip: An air filter that looks very dirty does not mean that it is no longer working properly, so whether it needs to be replaced depends on the condition of the vehicle.
